35th District Prospectus
Wisconsin's 35th Assembly District is located in the heart of the North Woods. The district includes all of Lincoln County, and incorporates parts of Langlade, Oneida, and Marathon Counties. Recent voting trends suggest that the district is evenly split along party lines, and may be leaning Democratic. In 2004, Senator Russ Feingold won re-election with ease, receiving over 55% of the vote in the district. Governor Doyle also made another strong showing in the district by garnering over 53% in his re-election in 2006. Congressman Dave Obey has held the district for over 40 years and Barack Obama won with nearly 55% of the vote in 2008.
The Race for State Assembly
The race for the open seat in the 35th District is one of the most highly anticipated contests of 2010. This race will play a pivotal role as part of the Democratic strategy to keep the majority in the Assembly. In the previous election, Jay Schmelling made a strong showing against an incumbent Republican in Donald Friske who chose not to face Schmelling again this year. The 35th has proven to be a classic independent district and voters believe Jay is the independent progressive voice that personifies the people of his district. They are thrilled to have such a strong candidate running for their Assembly seat in 2010.
